A Realistic Girl's Guide to Christmas Gift-Giving

(From Someone Whose Love Language Is Not Gifts… But Still Loves to Give Thoughtfully)
Let me start by telling the absolute truth: I do not like Christmas shopping.
There, I said it.
I'm not one of those people who gets excited about browsing aisles, wrapping gifts, or building a color-coordinated mountain under the tree. That is simply not my ministry. Gifts are not my love language. I would much rather you give me a hug, do something kind, or help me with something on my to-do list than give me a random present.
But here's the twist…
I LOVE a practical gift. Give me something that fits my life, something I can use every day and I will cherish it forever.
And if I'm being really honest? Half the gifts people give me end up regifted, donated, or shoved in a drawer. Not because I'm ungrateful, but because they don't fit my life. I don't need more candles. I don't need decorative things that collect dust. I need things that work with me, not against me.
So when I give gifts, I think: Would I actually use this? Would it make their day easier or better?
Like one of my favorite gifts my husband ever gave me: a big wall calendar. Not a cute aesthetic one just for pictures… a functional family calendar where we track schedules, workouts, basketball practice, what's missing in the fridge, ALL OF IT. That calendar runs our household, and I love it because it's useful.
Same with cups. I love a good cup. Cute cups, gym cups, matching cups, cups with a straw, anything that keeps me hydrated while I'm working or working out. I'm not a full-time Stanley girl, but I'll take one if it's cute. A useful cup? Sign me up.
Workout clothes, comfortable scrubs, gym shoes… give me the things I actually use every single day and I am happy.
So naturally, when I give gifts, I give practical gifts. Gifts people will use. Gifts that won't end up in a drawer, closet, or donation bin by February.
And that's honestly what this blog is about.
Gifts I've Actually Kept & Used
Let me show you what I mean. Here are gifts I've received that I genuinely love and still use:
That big wall calendar from my husband (still using it daily)
A personalized gym bag from a friend (I take it everywhere)
Cozy joggers my sister gave me (I wear them constantly)
A water bottle with my initial on it (yes, I'm that girl)
Workout headbands that actually stay put
Notice the pattern? They're all things I use. Not things that sit on a shelf looking cute.
Why Practical Gifts Matter
Here's the thing: Gifts should match the person not your idea of what a gift "should" be.
I have two Secret Santas this year. One person said the only thing they want is gift cards which is fine, because I'm a practical gift giver. But I'll still take it a step further:
If she likes coffee? I'm putting that Starbucks card inside a personalized mug.
If he wears hats? I'm tucking those gift cards inside a custom beanie.
If they drink water like I do? They're getting a cute cup with space for the gift cards inside.
Because even when I'm giving people exactly what they asked for, I still like adding a touch that feels thoughtful, personal, and "me."
Giving Gifts to the People Who Are Hard to Shop For
Some people are easy kids especially. My kids tell me exactly what they want. No guessing game.
Adults? Whole different story.
💛 My husband is not a gift person either.
It's honestly stressful because I want to get him something… but he never needs anything and he doesn't want clutter. This year I kept it simple and smart:
He's been working on some homes in Gary that he plans to sell, so I'm getting him artwork he can use to stage the houses. Affordable, useful, and still thoughtful. That's my love language.
💛 My mom is the hardest.
My mom works nonstop and does not rest. So every year I try to give her:
Cozy loungewear
Relaxing self-care gifts
Things that remind her to SIT DOWN
💛 My niece (2nd Christmas!)
I love personalized gifts for kids, so this year she's getting a personalized blanket. Functional, adorable, and something she'll use for years. sometimes gifts aren't just things—they're messages.
How to Choose the Right Gift for Someone
Here's my rule: Look at the person before you look at the gift.
Ask yourself:
What do they use every single day?
What do they complain about not having?
What do they keep buying multiples of? (That's a hint!)
What would make their morning routine easier?
What hobby or habit do they talk about constantly?
What do they hate spending money on for themselves?
Pro tip: If someone is always carrying a water bottle, get them a better one. If they're always cold, get them cozy stuff. If they love coffee, upgrade their mug game. It's not rocket science—it's just paying attention.
If you can answer even one of those questions, you can find a great gift.

Gift card + personalized item combo (Starbucks card inside a custom mug, Amazon card inside a cozy beanie)
"Favorites" baskets (their favorite snacks, drinks, and self-care items in a cute bin)
The "You Time" gift (cozy socks, a blanket, candle, and tea = instant relaxation kit)
Personalized anything (add a name and suddenly it feels way more thoughtful)
Subscription gifts (give them something they'll love all year, not just one day)

What Gift-Giving Really Means to Me
Giving someone a gift isn't about the price or the amount of effort—it's about intention.
I'm not a "gift person." But I am a "make-your-life-easier" person.
I love giving gifts that:
Make people feel seen
Match their lifestyle
Don't become clutter
Save them time
Bring them joy
Help them rest
Support their hobbies
Solve a little problem in their day
And if you're like me—someone who wants Christmas to feel intentional, thoughtful, and not stressful—you can absolutely do the same.
This year, I'm mixing gift cards with meaningful items, giving practical things people will actually use, and slipping personal touches into every package.

Final thought:
You don't have to love gift-giving to be good at it. You just have to care about the person more than the pressure.
This Christmas, give what matters. Give what fits. Give what helps. And if that's a wall calendar or a water bottle? Perfect.
Because the best gifts aren't the ones that look good under the tree—they're the ones that make life a little easier, a little cozier, or a little more joyful.
